Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 30 2007 for Master Baiter's Sportsfishing and Tackle

Written By: Stan Gabruk

If a fishing paradise ever existed, I'd have to say Puerto Vallarta at this time of year, has to be it! The ESPN boys are here and it that's not an indication that Puerto Vallarta is on fire at the fishing grounds, I don't know what is! Monster Yellowfin Tuna in the 300 plus pound range will leave even the saltiest of fisherman with an aching back, spaghetti arms and a smile that won't leave your face. If there ever in your life was a time to get off your butt and get out there, this is it amigos!

If you're one of my regular readers, you know that many times I'll tell you a new trick or location, bait, something that makes the playing field a little more even when you're out there trying to make something happen. But at this time of the year, the formula is simple, get a line in the water, it will produce results. Trolling is just on of the preferred methods of hooking up Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. This time of year with plenty of Skip Jacks in the water, it doesn't make much sense to hassle with kites or lures. Keeping it simple using a sewn up bait is working like a machine that never stops. But as fisherman, we know anything and everything can change in a heartbeat, so be prepared for any possibility. If not, it could mean you're the only boat without a Monster, Tuna that is.

Corbetena this week has been everything you could hope for. Huge Black Marlin the size of trucks are attacking baits almost before they're in the water. Yellowfin Monsters over 300 lbs are a daily occurrence! Sailfish, Dorado, Pargo, you name it, it's out there. I mean it's these sorts of conditions that have earned Puerto Vallarta the reputation it has.

When it comes to El Banco, what can you say? We haven't seen any "Granders" yet this year and we're due. A Grander is a Marlin over a thousand pounds. I believe that if the conditions stay the way they are now, we could be boating some world records from this area, like it's known for. El Banco or The Bank has always produced the largest boated fish in PV. That's not to say the other locations are bad, it just means that if you're shooting for you best chance to boat a World Record, you head for The Bank. Plenty of bait, water is great, smooth seas, it jus doesn't get any better than this.

With all the action going on at Corbetena and El Banco, we haven't been getting many reports from the closer to shore locations. But the usual places are all working perfectly and waiting for the angler who doesn't want to spend sun-up to sun-down fishing for monsters. But Sailfish are still at the Marietta Islands and El Morro in very large numbers, most in the 80 inch and longer range. Rooster fish are still living off the trash line along with good sized Mahi Mahi. Along with the usual cast of Snappers, Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, needle fish (I call them Mexican Barracuda), and lots more to choose from.

Around the point at Punta Mita, the Dorado are out there in big numbers and hanging around the buoys like normal. Structure areas are ripe with Snappers perfect for the dinner table. Rooster fish are here along with Snook at the river mouths. Sails have been hanging around feeding on the abundant bait fish in the area. So if you're looking for a shorter duration trip, this is a great option.

Remember folks, not all charter companies come from the same molds. Ask yourself why there are cheap boats, then more expensive boats. It's not about profit margins; it's about Service, Quality, Safety and customer satisfaction. Use venders who have shops, not booths on the street. You'll always get what you pay for and sometimes more than you bargained for. Price is always an indication of quality and service.

Master Baiter's is still supporting the Graffiti project where we cover up the markings of a criminal element in our community. If you'd care to be involved, we'd appreciate your support in the form of money, time or money. Just come by and drop off your donation at the Marina Vallarta Store and become part of the solution.

Until next week, don't forget to kiss your fish!!
