Bon Chovy Report, May 18/09

The Gulf Islands have really picked over the last week. Excellent numbers of fish in the 10-25 pound range are being hit consistently off Gabriola Island!!!

We had a 2 day charter over to the Gulf Islands this past weekend and had 20 chinook salmon hit the gear over the 2 days. Our guests guests came home with some beauty chinook salmon up to 19 pounds and tons of crab from Vancouver Harbour. This is the time to do some longer trips to the Gulf Islands or do a 2 day/1 night fishing package.

The fish over on the Gulf Islands do not some to be holding on structure. They have been offshore 1-4 miles of Gabriola in 500-800 feet of water. Long offshore tacks trolling anywhere from 80-180 feet down seem to be the ticket. It is a big body of water and the boats that were persistent did very well. Boats were getting fishing on coyotes, spoons, hootchies, and anchovies of course. We were running anchovies exclusively. The Gulf Island fishery typically continues into July and early August. Hopefully the fishing keeps up.

Locally fishing has still been pretty good as well. We managed a couple nice fish over 20 pounds this week along with some nice fish in the teens. Our biggest fish of the week was 24 pounds and was caught inside Vancouver Harbour.

We have been focusing our local efforts off the south side of Bowen Island and Vancouver Harbour over the last week. Anchovies are now taking the majority of fish in local waters. Good depths to try seem to be anywhere from 50-140 feet. The fish are suspended now so it is good to run a range of different depths on the downriggers

Crabbing has been excellent in the harbour as well.

Give us a call or an email to book a chinook salmon charter! Some of the best fishing of the year is taking place right now!!!!
