Downtown Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report

May 8, 2007

Vancouver Report:

The weather is a bit better lately but still cooler and rainier than normal. The forecast for this week is very good and we are out daily so we should have a good handle on the outer waters Chinook fishery. For the past week we fished the Bowen side a few times with disappointing results for May. We decided to transition back to the harbour and the results have been quite good with fish on most trips in the 12 to 15 pound range. Still seeing lots of under sized fish averaging 50 cm - almost legal. The seals are still a problem with most trips losing at least 1 good fish the them. Cop Car and Green/White glow spoons are working best but plastics baits and anchovy (5.25") trolled behind a flasher also working. Our depths have shallowed this week with the most productive depth 60 feet.

Crabbing in the Harbour is EXCELLENT !!! Try the traditional areas like Spanish Banks and the mile markers for good results. Chicken has always worked best for us in about 70 feet of water.

The West side of Bowen, Hutt Island and Tunstall Bay have been very good for the past week with some nice fish in the 20's coming back to the docks. Not many under sized fish is this area so if you want action try the harbour but if you want larger fish go West ! Depths are much deeper than the harbour depths at 130 to 170 feet. Last year we had many good days in Tunstall in May. The East side of Bowen (Seymour Bay) is also a good spot to try when the winds are up.

Have not seen the plankton blooms yet but it's not far off. This usually tells us the Winter fishery is done and it's time to expect returning fish to our waters following the herring in the Strait.

No reports from Thrasher over the past week but it's only a matter of time for this fishery to get red hot !

The phone is really starting to ring now that the cool Spring weather behind us as people get out and find some Spring Chinook action. If you are interested in going fishing drop by our new dock location (we moved about 50 feet!) at the Westin Bayshore Hotel beside the LIFT Bar and Grill or give us a call.

Good luck and tight lines.
