Here in the southern Willamette Valley we are all in a waiting mode for the arrival of our annual run of Spring Chinook Salmon and our Summer Steelhead. Some years they arrive as early as April, bu this year we are looking at May. Cool water temperatures have slowed the upriver migration of these anadromous jewels. Water temperatures at Willamette Falls (near Portland)has stayed near 50. When it rises to the magic temperature of 53, get ready, cuz here they come! And they'll come by the hundres each day and eventually work to a crescendo of several thousound per day crossing the Falls and headed for the Santiam, the McKenzie and the Middle Fork Willamette. It's a fantastic May though July fishery. Meanwhile, we have been having fun taking native Redside Trout (Rainbows)on the fly. We run these trips all summer long and have great success, even for beginner fly fisher.
