Crazy Fishing, Crazy Conditions!!

We have seen it all this week. Ice, 70 degrees, low water, high water, flood water, clear water stained water, muddy water, 60 mph winds, sun and clouds. What next??

Despite all those conditions we managed to pound fish everyday but one and even that day we landed 4 and hooked 9. That is a good day under any circumstances.

The salmon river is running at 1,800 plus run-off the gauge at Pineville was 2,240 cfs, the last I looked. I just talked to a friend in the wire hole and he had five today under those conditions. What a fabulous steelhead season we are having. I know I have said it before, but if you are ever going to fish for steelhead, this is the year to do it. Do not miss this season.

The Oswego River is still running high, but it is at a very fishable level. A good mix of browns and rainbows are being caught. Concentrate your efforts at the dam or lock 7. Chartreuse and pink eggs sacs are doing the job, as well as white jigs under a float.

Pics from the last few days.

Largest fish of 2008, so far. 15 plus!!

Western New York fishing report by Jay Peck –www.jaypeckguides.com

Because of the usually warm January thaw. A lot of fishermen have descended to take advantage of the warm water and do a little fishing. Oak Orchard River has seen more fishing pressure than normal the last few days. Due to the fishing pressure and the river conditions, medium flow and slightly stained color to the water. The fishing at the Oak has been slow the past week. For now there are a few fish at the dam and a few more fish located down river in the slow water. These conditions will persist until we have another high water pulps to freshen the fishing up. Until then for the fly fishermen, fish with light tippets small egg flies and nymphs. For the gear fishermen stick with light lines 4 to 6 pound test and small natural colored egg sacs.

The smaller area creeks have finally cleared them selves out of ice. These smaller creeks should be fishing well for the next few days. Even though some of the creeks may be flowing a little high and off-color, do not hesitate to give them a try. These creeks will often have holdover Brown trout mixed in with fresh run steelhead. If you find the right pool you can enjoy a mixed bag catch. Fly fishermen try fishing with egg patterns in size 12 to 8 in your favorite colors for the steelhead. For the Brown trout try a slow swing with a streamer size 6 or 4, as always any color is good as long as it is white.

The Genesee River -- blown out and it will stay blown out for some time to come.

Please Note: All ice is unsafe! Do not venture out on it. It is only a fish. Please don't do it.

The walleye fishing on Oneida Lake continues to be very good, if you can get to them. Again the above normal temperatures have prevented any ice formation but anglers are catching fish from shore and by boat. Evening fishing is the best using stickbaits and the black/silver and blue/silver colors remain the best color choice.

Open Dates for January

11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23
