Great Shark, Sail, King and Mahi Mahi Fishing aboard Hooked up

December 22nd, 2011

What a great day of Deep Sea Fishing Aboard the Hooked Up off the coast of South Florida in Fort Lauderdale.

We started out our day fishing with Andy and his son Andy for just a 3-hour tour (Just like the song) but with a much better ending.

These guys had their heart set on trying to catch a shark. Now bare in mind this was a short 3- hour trip and this was a tall order to fill.

But all the same we went out to 350 feet of water and set out our 2 kites with 2 live baits suspended from 1 kite and a big shark bait also suspended from the other kite. We also sent a big shark bait all the way down 350 feet to the bottom.

Ok the trap was set and the wait was on. After about 45 min of waiting our deep rod bent over and line started peeling off the reel as if there was a fright train connected to the other end. Big Andy jumped in the chair and the fight was on. And I do mean the FIGHT was on!! At first there really was nothing Andy could do but to hang on and watch all this line get peeled off the reel. After a good 5 min of line screaming off the reel it started to slow down a bit and Andy went to work.

I've got to take a second to say that I have been fishing these waters off the coast of South Florida since the early 70s and I really had no idea what the heck we had on at this point but I did know it was going to be a BIG FISH.

Ok back to the fish fight. This was one of those fights where Andy would gain 4 or 5 feet of line and than the fish would take 2 or 3 feet back. This was a real back and forth tug a war. This went on for over 45 min till at last we could see a little color coming up from the deep.

Much to everyone's surprise it turned out to be an 11-foot plus big eye Thresher shark.

If you've never seen a big-eyed Thresher I've got to say that it is the coolest looking shark in the world. It has eyes as big around as a beer can and its tail is almost as long as it's body. It truly looks like a creature from another planet.

Once this sea monster was at the boat he was as tired as Andy so we were able to slide his head in threw the tuna door to get a few photos and a quick measurement of this fish and than we slid him right back out the door to fight again another day.

WOW what else can I say!!! Nice going Andy.

Ok now it was time to bring in the kites and head back for the dock. As J.J. started reeling in the baits the other shark rod that was on the kite bent over and BAM we had another shark on.

This time little Andy jumped in the chair and the second fight of the trip was on.

Little Andy had plenty of time to watch how his dad did it so he was up for the fight.

After a good 5 min little Andy had a 4-foot silky shark at the side of the boat. Once again a couple of photos and off he darted into the deep blue sea.

Andy and Andy thanks sooooo much this was a fishing trip that I will not forget!!

WHAT A BLAST.

As we got back to the dock we had our afternoon trip eager to give their luck a shot at some deep-sea fishing aboard Hooked Up.

We had Laden, Elizabeth, Ashton, Keith and Bryon all from Eastern Kentucky.

Once again we went right to kite fishing with our live baits suspended from the kites along with a couple of shark baits out there.

The trap was set and the wait was on.

We waited and waited and finally a bite and Elizabeth jumped in the chair and the fight was on. She ended up landing a Mahi Mahi and got the skunk out of the box.

Ok baits right back out there and once again we waited and waited with no more bites.

We decided to make a move. So we brought in all the baits and moved from 350 feet of water into 130 feet and set the baits right back out there.

Soon after the baits were all set BAM a bite and Keith jumped in the chair and landed a nice 25-pound kingfish.

Ok things were looking up and than BAM another bite this time Landen jumped in the chair just as a big sailfish started jumping all over the place.

After a good 15 min fight Landen had his first sailfish ever to the side of the boat.

Fishing with Ken aboard Hooked Up off South Florida

December 21st, 2011

Today we had an old customer / friend Ken from San Francisco California out for a few hours of deep-sea fishing off the coast of South Florida aboard the Hooked Up.

We really don't know why but as it turned out fishing was just plain old slow today but we kept at it and we did manage to catch 3 out of 4 Mahi Mahi that we had hooked all at the same time with just one angler.

Like they say fishing can be hours of boredom interrupted by moments of panic and chaos. (LOL)

Ken thanks again and we are looking forward to fishing again this March.

More Mahi Mahi aboard Hooked up off fort Lauderdale

December 16th, 2011

Today we fished with Joe and Mike from New York, Bryan from Baltimore, Paul from D.C., Nikki from Chicago and Mark from Canada.

Since we did good catching fish off shore the other day we thought what the heck if it worked once so we went right after Mahi Mahi again and sure enough we ended up landing a half dozen more great eating Mahi Mahi.

Thanks again to all of our anglers for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.
