Lake Erie walleye fishing is heating up

Lake Erie, Ohio - Freshwater Fishing Report
Western Basin - Reef Complex

If hooking a big Lake Erie walleye is in your plans, spring or fall are the best times of the year to go. While walleye are rather active and usually much easier to find during the spring, it still takes some tactics to reel them in. With the jig-n-minnow action winding down and the water temperatures rising, the walleye bite is getting hot.

Although springtime is a good time for walleye fishing, anglers need to keep a few things in mind. Everything from actual weather conditions to location and bait can impact the outcome of a fishing trip. The trick is really gauging the action carefully before picking a spot to stick in.

We have been primarily using gold weapons....aka....Mayfly Rigs, worm harnesses and bottom bouncers. Fishing has been good, when the weather is good and after a big blow, it can be a real challenge for even the most seasoned of walleye anglers.

Capt.'s Tip: "Work the baits low and slow" to improve your catch rate.

The waters surrounding the Reef Complex have been producing some excellent catches recently. Try "A Can", "B Can", "L Can", or Niagara Reef as starting points.

The temperatures and wind speed this time of year, especially in April and May, can be brutal on anglers. One day the wind will blow 35-40 mph and the next day it will trickle the flags at 5-10 mph. Exercising a bit of patience, sometimes caution....finding the right spots and paying heed to weather patterns can make a difference.

Erie Quest Charters utilizes time tested walleye tackle and techniques that work. Whether vertical jigging, bottom bouncing or drift casting - your trip will be one that you and your group will long remember for years to come! :)

Lake Erie walleye fishing will put a smile on your face too!

Best of luck and tight lines....

Capt. Rick
