You have to say one thing about this new year, the wind is fresh and strong. We have had some very good fishing. Live shrimp have produced plenty of tarpon around Government Cut. It has been shocking to see so many tarpon over 120 pounds so early in the year. We have caught more snook this winter than I have ever caught at this time of year. Some of these have been up to 18 pounds. As is expected this time of year, shrimp runs have been very good in the evenings. Off shore the sailfish have been chewing. Days with several sailfish releases have been pretty common.

The best part of the sailfish action has been the fact that the best action has been 3 or 4 miles from the dock. Big king mackerel have been joining the school size kings in good numbers. On the mackerel subject, spanish mackerel have been the best in years. I guess all those sardines that have flooded the area have helped draw the spanish along with all the other game fish. On the wrecks, the almaco jacks have been good, but we have been very disappointed with the grouper and snapper catches. Swordfish reports have been good whenever the weather allows, but we have been too busy catching tarpon to fish for the swords. You will find me in a lot of new places.
