Lake Ontario Outdoors & High Adventure Sportfishing wishes you a happy and prosperous New Year!

It finally looks like winter again and perhaps this cold weather will bring some ice to area lakes. The hard water fisherman are taking it on the chin afte that big rain and unusual warmth.

Open water fishermen on the other hand are having ther time of their lives as area streams are fishing more like April with high flows, colored water and active fish.

Heavy rains have brought the Oswego River up to a dangerous and unfishable level. The Good news is the cold weather will lock up any run-off and the river levels will fall rapidly and areas around the dam and the lock 7 should be in good shape for the weekend.

Look for plenty of steelhead and a few browns when waters recede. Egg sacs in yellow and white along with worms and bucktail jigs will all work.

The walleye fishing on Oneida Lake continues to be very good. Again the above normal temperatures have prevented any ice formation but anglers are catching fish from shore and by boat. Evening fishing is the best using stickbaits and the black/silver and blue/silver colors remain the best color choice.

Something to think about…….

A PROMISE FOR THE NEW YEAR . . . It's that the time of year for taking stock of things, and making resolutions--those promises we make to ourselves about important goals to accomplish in the coming year. Whether your list is long or short, Shelley and I ask you to add one more simple promise to your list.

Sometime in 2009 introduce someone to fishing or hunting. Inviting either a newcomer or a former participant to go fishing or hunting is a simple act, yet one that research continues to show is the most successful way to get people started or reactivated in our sports.

"If each of us in the hunting and fishing community followed through on a promise to issue such an invitation and actually took someone, the effects would be exponential and profound, not only to our industry, but for fish, wildlife, habit and the protection of our rights as sportsmen and women.

I can assure you that such a promise is on my New Year's list of resolutions, and I ask that everyone in our community do the same." One easy and fun way to issue that invitation is by booking a lake charter or river trip with High Adventure Sportfishing.

This task will come back to you ten fold and we are certain all those involved will thank you for years to come.

So put it at the top of your promise list. You have 365 days to keep it.

Happy New Year, Troy & Shelley
