The Old Cooling Box Fan!
As I walked outside the other day from the air-conditioning to the smothering heat it made me start to thinking about yesteryear. Back in the old days and in the same house that I am living in now we didn't have air conditioning. (Don't worry we do have it now and plenty of it!) The fact of the matter is that it's wasn't as hot then as it is now! Say what you want, but sooner or later we are all going to have to face "global warming" head on!
As I said earlier, we didn't have any sort of air conditioning. The fact of the matter is I don't think anyone in our neighborhood did! We all had what was called "box fans," which were also referred to as "window fans." At night daddy would reversed the fan, crack the windows in our bedrooms, and the entire house would be cooled off. The fact of the matter is I remember sleeping under covers at this time of the year. The breeze that circled the house looking for a window to flow into was definitely cooled off! As I though about the old times I wondered the difference in the amount of energy used by the old box fan and the central air conditioning unit might be. Without going technical in regards to amps used I will go instead with amount paid! In this case I am sure that amps used in the old days was a lot less than the dollars that we fork out at this day and time!
