Hi folks,

I hope you all had a very merry Christmas and are looking forward to the new year that will be upon us in just a couple of days. Here in Baja things remain very good. I finished up my season in mag bay just a week or so ago and I am now back here on the East Cape conducting trips both here and in Cabo San Lucas.

Mag Bay this year was good over all. The marlin fishing was not quite as good as what it has been in years past over in mag bay but the action was steady once you found the fish. We did have some very good action for football sized tuna as well as some very nice conventional fishing for big grouper. If you have never been to mag bay it is a place all should see some day.

If you are looking to get out early in 2011 and do some fly fishing do not forget about Mexico. Baja has excellent winter fly fishing. Here in the East Cape we continue to see sardina along most of our beaches. The sardina have been available on most days by the few bait pangas that are currently working. The biggest problem is finding a bait panga that is out fishing. If you do find a bait panga with sardina we continue to see some very good fishing.

Surprisingly we continue to see some good action for dorado here in the East Cape. These dorado have been scattered throughout the area with most of the fish being found to the North off of Punta Pescadero. Most of the fish have been on the small side with an average fish weighing about 10 lbs. but mixed in are some very nice dorado up to 30 lbs. Most of the boats are releasing the smaller fish and keeping only bigger fish.

We also currently have some excellent fly fishing for some very big skip jack. Most of these fish have been in the 8-10 lb. range with a few reaching 15 lbs. Most of the skip jack have been off the shelf in front of La Ribera.

If you are looking for bill fish we continue to see a decent number of sail fish and marlin. Most of the boats are not targeting them as the fishing for dorado has been the focus by most anglers.

Inshore we have some very good fly fishing for sierra, jacks, and a few smaller rooster fish. The sierra are here in very good numbers as well as the jacks. I have seen some very nice sierra up to 8 lbs. in the area of los pinos as well as the spa. I was out on Christmas looking for sierra and could not keep the jacks off the fly. It was a great way to spend Christmas day. As I mentioned earlier we still have some good populations of bait along the beaches. If you find the bait you will find the fish.

I spent the last couple of days fly fishing over in Cabo San Lucas with my guest Patrick Gilbert. We had a blast. We found great action for rooster fish. We caught many smaller rooster fish on the fly as well as breaking off a couple of very nice fish in the 30 lb. range. We also encountered sierra, jacks, and a few small yellow tail.

I hope every one has a very happy and safe new year. I hope you all find some time to go fishing in 2011. I look forward to seeing you here in Baja in 2011.

Until then . keep fly fishing!!
