Chase N' Tails Fishing Charters - Inshore Report -

Trout season is closed this month for the Nature Coast area and will reopen in March. So any trout caught please handle with care wet your hands because trout have a protective slim coating, or use a DE hooker. Trout can be found from the shallow grass flats with a depth of 1-4 feet and a water temp of 60 to 68 degrees, to the back creeks and deeper depressions with rocky bottom. Trout like a temperature of 58-74 degrees in my area so looking at your temp gage can get you in the right area. Look for mullet schools for trout and red fish, reds & trout will hang around the mullet schools and feed on what the mullet stir up such as crabs, shrimp, and small bait fish. A live shrimp under a popping cork will produce the best catch. Or a white jerk bait with a 1/8oz jig head bouncing across the bottom will also work great.

Black drum, sheep's head, and flounder are all biting great on live shrimp, When I fish for the drum & sheep's I like to use a 1/0 circle hook and a small split shot, Target holes with rocks, oysters, or around springs for best action. Get your self a pack of frozen shrimp for chum and a few dozen live shrimp. Find a spot where you want to fish anchor up and take 5 to 7 frozen shrimp rip them up in small pieces and flick them out for a few minutes. Then take a live shrimp and rip it in half toss it out and give it some slack, watch the line for movement or taps reel the slack in and feel for the weight of the fish, then just reel. The average size of the black drum are 16-24' and the sheep's 12-16". Flounder are being caught the same way fishing for the drum & sheep's. Flounder are being caught up to 16".

What to look forward to this month, well if the cold fronts stay more to the North the fishing will just get even better as the water warms up. Red fish are starting to school up in larger numbers 3-8 per school and upper slot size. Trout are just all over the place from the back creeks to the open grass flats.
