The fishing grounds off of San Jose del Cabo and to the north are starting to see more schooling of mackerel and sardinetas, this is also attracting gamefish such as striped marlin, dorado, thrasher and mako shark, as well as yellowfin tuna.

This past week there were once again more dorado seen in the fish counts, this due to warming water temperatures off of San Jose, fish were found close to shore as well as 3 to 8 miles out, at times congregating near drifting sargasso weed lines.

The most consistent fishing action is now being found closer to shore, this is where schools of sardinas have been congregating, attracting sierra, roosterfish, dorado and jack crevalle.

Sierra have been the most consistent catch close to shore, striking best on live sardinas, but also on a variety of artificial lures. The arroyo off of Chileno has been a hot spot, with much of the fleet concentrating in this area.

Inshore action was mainly for sierra in the 2 to 4 pound class, striking most consistently on trolled sardinas, but also on rapalas and hoochies. The same beach stretches produced some spotty roosterfish action and there were a couple of reports of dorado being hooking into right outside the surf zone.

Dorado numbers dropped and schools became scattered, though some fish in the 10 to 20 pound were still providing action, more often than not they were found closer to shore.

The most consistent fishing for dorado and yellowfin tuna was now being found on the fishing grounds from La Fortuna to Iman Bank.

Dorado were the most common species found, boats were catching easy limits, with many other fish being released, weights ranged from 10 to 20 pounds, with a few exceptions of larger fish mixed in.

Punta Gorda continues to be the best area to search for wahoo, the bite has varied from dead to wide open, depending when you were there and what baits or lures you were using. These wahoo, when active, would readily strike on mackerel, sardinas, yo-yo jigs, Yo-Zuri, Rapala and skirted lead heads.

Local panga fleets continued to find the best action close to shore off of Punta Gorda, this is where there were concentrations of dorado, yellowfin tuna and surprisingly many wahoo were still found schooling here, even though the water was cooling and off colored.

It was definitely the dorado action that highlighted the action in recent days. Quality sized for this late in the season. With bulls reportedly as large as 40 pounds and many fish in the 15 to 25 pound class.

he fishing action was very good through the weekend and at the start of the week, before conditions became less favorable. Dorado counts were high, with fish being found close to shore. Striking on practically anything offered.

Though the dorado have been hard to stay away from, there are still some nice late season wahoo to be had. The areas of Punta Gorda, Cardon and La Fortuna are producing fish on a daily basis, some anglers are landing up to three or four wahoo in a morning.

The first week of December produced the best wahoo bite of the fall season, several charters reported up to five wahoo landed and many other strikes lost as well. Fish were ranging in sizes from 10 to 50 pounds, striking on a wide variety of lures and baits, including sardinas, caballito, Rapala, Yo-Yuri, Marauder and yo-yo.

Wahoo have become much more active the past few days, particularly off of La Fortuna, anglers caught them on sardinas, cocinero (jacks), chihuil, ballyhoo and even casting yo-yo jigs. Also the elusive ‘hoo were striking on the normal array of specialized lures, such as Marauders, Rapalas, Yo-Zuris and skirted lead heads.

Over this last weekend a very respectable bite for wahoo developed, the hot spots were off of Punta Gorda, less than a mile from shore and also on the Inner Gordo Banks, with a few other wahoo taken from the areas off of Cardon, La Fortuna, Iman and San Luis.

The yellowfin tuna were biting well on the live bait early in the morning, but it took quite a bit of chum to get the tuna up on the surface in the feeding mood and once the bait supply ended the fish disappeared just as fast.

For yellowfin tuna the spot has been the Inner Gordo Banks, not any big numbers of fish, but the fish being landed are all 40 pounds and up, included this week were yellowfin of 150, 120, 95 and many in the 60 to 80 pound class.

Most of the tuna that were hooked into and landed weighed in the 40 to 60 pound class, though some much larger fish were seen and hooked, only to be lost, this could be good news for local tournament teams gearing up for the coming WON Jackpot Tournament.

Wahoo are making their annual fall appearance, so far not in any significant numbers, but everyday a few anglers that are specifically targeting them with their array of specialized wahoo type lures are having some success.

Anglers that have their arsenal of specialized wahoo trolling lures are finding an occasional fish, but still no significant bite to report, only a couple here and there, the few wahoo that have been brought in are on the smaller side, averaging 15 to 30 pounds.
Rough Seas Small Craft Advisory In Caboby Eric Brictson (10/12/2008)
Most charter operations shut down their operations as of Thursday morning due to small craft advisors, eight foot seas and rainfall possibilities. On Sunday the ocean had calmed and boats were able to get out, though many fleets were waiting until Monday to fully resume operations.
Giant Squid Encounters In San Jose Del Caboby Eric Brictson (10/05/2008)
Giant squid have been encountered regularly and are also being using for chumming and strip bait for both yellowfin tuna and dorado. Last week there were a couple of nice sized tuna landed using this technique, fish weighing 90, 100 and 130 pounds were accounted for.

The action this past week has really busted wide open for yellowfin tuna and dorado. Dorado have been found throughout the area, from the Pacific to inside the Sea of Cortez, striking on all types of lures and even more so on slowly trolled bait.
