Snook season opens on Friday.

Web 8-06. Captain Van Hubbard's fishing report for 8-24-06

We got rained out on our Friday trip. When I launched the Dorado at %:30 AM it looked great. There was just one small shower on radar, but not a big deal. Then as I went to run up the Stump Pass marina the bottom dropped out. The storms just build up and poured for three hours. Maybe next time this group will get better weather.

Sunday was much better. Chad Smith, Chris and Allan work together up in Ruskin, and were ready for some Charlotte Harbor fishing. We started out at 6:30 AM from the marina with Chris and Allan. Then we stopped by Little Gasparilla Island to pick up Chad at his Dad's. we had a beautiful sunrise, slight breeze to hold the anchor heading and keep us comfortable. Bait was abundant. It was slow coming into the Magic Chum but roared in when they tasted it. We started off in Bull Bay where we had been finding some nice reds. After an hour we had one slot red in the box and saw a few small snook pops so we decided to move on. We tried some trout out on the Harbor. They were abundant but small. They had three on at a time but not any large enough. Chad added one big Spanish Mackerel to the cooler and we moved on. We went up to Turtle bay and found some more trout. This time some were bigger but still a lot of little ones. We looked around and got a few more macks to make sure they had dinner. It's good to see the smaller trout and they will grow fast. No signs of red tide. The water was looking good at the passes. Inside is dark from the rain runoff. We had fun and called it a day to beat the evening storms. See Chad's note.

Captain Van,

Chris, Allan, and I would like to thank you for the great experience on the water that you allowed us to share. It is not often in our industry that the three of us are able to come together and have that kind of an opportunity. You made that opportunity a very positive one with your candid hosting abilities, as well as, sharing your experience and knowledge that I know will make me a better angler and my colleagues as well. We will certainly keep in touch and I pray that the storm has little or no affect on you or ourselves.

Sincerely, Chad Smith
