STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod & Haddock Fishing 4/28/2010

The late-starting 2010 cod season on Stellwagen Bank is off to a banner start. Much like last season, the shoal-water (100-120ft) is inundated with sands eels, and the cod, pollock, and whales are taking advantage of this baitfish bonanza. Limits of cod by mid-day was the rule for traveling anglers from NY, NJ and CT this past week. Easy, jig fishing on top of the bank produced scrod, medium cod and pollock, then a move to the eastern edge added a some haddock to the larder using skimmer clams.

Danny Azzato's group from Oakdale, NY reported back that they had a great trip with Capt. Scott on the B-Fast's DECISIVE. Dan is the owner of Fish Unlimited Taxidermy on Long Island, who has been fishing these waters for years with great success, and some of his fish mounts grace my booth display at the winter regional sportsman's shows

Connecticut angler's with Joseph Lopes from Lebanon had the same results on last Friday on the DECISIVE as did long-time client Chuck Garen and friends from East Hartford; limits of cod with Pollock mixed in and some haddock from the deep-water.

Pat Lynch was especially emphatic that I mention his Saturday trip with Capt. Bill on B-Fast's FOUR SONS. Pat, his brother and friends always seem to "luck-out" with the weather and the fishing on their annual safari north to Stellwagen. Both Capt. Bill and Capt. Scott, finding fishing in the fleet a little crowded, moved off on their own where the Jersey anglers from Galloway bailed cod over the rails in solitude; the luck of the Irish! Hopefully, Pat's luck will continue as he tries to nail his first long-beard gobblers next week.

After the passage of the mid-week front, the weather looks great; 70's are predicted in New England. Shoal-water jig fishing just 15 miles offshore and great spring weather combine to produce cod fishing as good as it gets.
