Last week I reported that I was headed to Chub Key in the Bahamas and now I am back with the full report. My trip to Chub was bitter sweet because our goal was to tangle with some yellofin tunas or possibly a blue marlin. Most of our fishing time was spent trolling an area know as "The Pocket". Spending so much time trolling turned out to be the bitter part of the story without a lot to show for our efforts.
The sweet part of the story was the time we spent exploring new reefs and drop-offs. We caught a nice assortment of Grouper, Kingfish and Snapper. Fishing these waters had us dropping baits on fish that were not very picky; they ate anything and everything we put in the water. I can't wait to go back next year.
A little closer to home the action continues to be on the slow side. Today I fished with a couple of very competitive friends that were determined to out fish each other. The competition started as soon as we stopped for some bait. After filling the well we headed over the reefs in search of some action. The action was a little slow at first but heated up quickly on our second drift. The duo managed to catch a couple of kings and six to eight bonito that gave them a great workout. I think it if safe to say that the summer bonito run is now in full swing. We had four fish on at once today. Even though these fish are usually release they provide a great deal of excitement to any fishing trip.
Hopefully the action will continue to improve and the dolphin (mahi-mahi) will show up in force again. I will be heading over to the Dry Tortugas this weekend and should have a full report next week. Right now I only have a couple of open days in July but August still has plenty of openings so give me a call if you want to go fishing.
