Winston Parsons, Angus, Clint, Carl, Riad and Claude chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team for a private deep sea charter boat sport fishing trip in Fort Lauderdale, FL aboard the Happy Day Today.  As they boarded the boat, they were greeted by Captain Zsak and mate, Dave, from the Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat Team.   We had nice weather and calm seas with little to no sea weed.

We have been catching Wahoos while trolling with live baits this week, so this was our goal for today’s charter boat trip.  We started the morning catching Bullet Bonitas at the sea buoy north of Fort Lauderdale.  These are excellent bait fish, and we have been catching them since the beginning of the fall.  We are using smaller size jigs which enable us to catch up to 3 Bullets at a time.  Once we had enough Bullets in our live-well, we moved off to fish in an area that has a large reef structure with sunken ship wrecks.   I started fishing in 100 feet of water and slow trolled the Livies from deep to shallower waters and back out again. I slowly trolled the baits and angled the boat north and offshore.  The first mate put out three surface lines, a high line, a right and left rigger line with a fourth deeper down rigger bait.  We had enough Bullets in the well to replace them in case some died or got eaten.  As we were trolling, one of the lines started to pull harder – the bait seemed nervous and was trying to get away from a larger predator. The Bullet Bonita jumped out of the water and started to swim fast trying to get away from a larger fish. The line snapped out of the rigger, the first mate had the lines locked up and the fish was on!!  The line started ripping out of the reel - this fish pulled a ton of line.  We started fighting with some gains and loss of line, mostly losses at the beginning of the fight when this fish made big runs.  We fought this fish with light drag, and it took just over a half hour.  The fish came up and the first mate reached over and gaffed the Wahoo pulling him over the covering board and into the fish box.  This was a 35+ pounder.

As soon as the Wahoo was in the fish box, we picked up the rest of our lines and made a move to another wreck. I was hoping there was another Wahoo hanging around the wreck feeding on bait. Now we went back to slow trolling the baits, and after a little while, we had another big bite on the down rigger.  The down rigger popped up, indicating there was a bite, and the deep line went ripping off.  Another killer fight started with the line ripping off.  This fight wasn’t as long as the last one, as we got this Wahoo in 15 minutes.   As the Wahoo came close to the boat, the first mate gaffed the Wahoo, and put him in the box.

We decided to pick up and move to another area and again put out three surface lines and one deep line, but no success this time.

It was now time to head back to the dock.   The happy anglers retired into the a/c salon watching the plasma TV and enjoying the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
