Spanish mackerel fishing has been good to excellent. It seems to peak right after cold fronts and during certain tides. Sometimes you can actually get some kings mixed in with the macks.
A couple of weeks ago I headed out on a somewhat experimental trip in search of the mighty broadbill. My goal was to land one of these majestic predators without loosing any sleep. Everything was going according to plan, I was very happy when we hooked up with one of these gladiators. Unfortunately the fight was short lived. The braided line somehow cut through our 200# wind on leader. I hope to give this another shot real soon.
Closer to shore and over the reefs, yellowtail snapper have been biting pretty well. Even though I don't fish at night much, one of my customers asked if I could take him out in search of these tasty critters. We anchored up on the first spot and there was just a trickle of current causing the fish to be tight lipped (not a single bite). I decided to move a little deeper to see if we could find some flowing water and within a few minutes we had the first fish in the boat. After that the fish came in a fairly steady pace and it didn't take long to put our limit together.
Last weekend I represented one of my sponsors in the "Sailfish Kickoff" tournament. On Day 1, action was very sporadic and none of the fish visited our spread all day long. Needless to say it was a very long day. On day 2 we were able to secure some goggle eyes for bait and they seemed to make all of the difference in the world. We ended the day releasing three out of five sails and moving up considerably in the standing. Now, I am focusing on the next tournament and preparation has already begun.
Now, with the holidays right around the corner I'm looking forward to more fishing.
