Orlando Muniz

Over the last couple of weeks we have continued to see some improvement in the fishing. Pretty soon the stronger cold fronts will begin to push further South bringing with them baitfish and the predators that follow. The only thing bad about these cold fronts is that the weather can turn pretty nasty at least for a day or two until things settle.

On my last report I mentioned that Spanish mackerel would be arriving here soon. We'll now I can confirm that yes they are here. A couple of days ago I hit one of my trusty inshore spots while trying to get out of some heavy winds that arrived in our area. Over the course of that day we caught Spanish mackerel, jacks, small gag grouper, and even a couple snook all of which were release to fight again. I'm sure that these mackerel will be a lot thicker over some other less fished wrecks and channel markers.

Offshore there have been a few dolphin (mahi mahi) being caught just outside of the reef. Most of the boats that are enjoying success with the dolphin are actually targeting sailfish that have also started to show up in better numbers. Boats actively fishing form them are averaging at lease one to two shots daily. Besides the dolphin and sailfish action, kingfish are still roaming our waters. Fall kingfish or "snakes" as they are often referred to tend to be smaller than the fish we typically catch in the spring months.

The last thing that I would like to mention is that along with improved fishing we are also enjoying much more comfortable temperatures. Although it is still pretty warm, it isn't anything like the heat and humidity we feel in July and August. If you would get out there and take part in the action, give me a call. I still have numerous days open in November and December.

Till Next Time,

Capt. Orlando Muniz
