I know I have been absent lately but it was becuase we have been real busy out on the water! These last two week we have fished almost every day mostly sail trips due to the weather. Fishing has been everywhere from good to bad having as many a 7 sails and as few as none...and of course a few kings and mahi to mix things up a little bit. But we definately had the highlight of the last two weeks of fishing tonight with the Stew Hitchner charter from NJ.

We were a little worried about not getting Stew and his friend Doug out fishing so we decided to hit the reefs a little since sailfishing has been so slow for most these last couple of days! It was really red hot but we put a few fish in the boat including a nice red grouper, a few yellowtails and a surpise hog snapper!

It was getting later in the afternoon and we decided to push offshore to find that conditions were very nice in the stream. we set the final line around 6:30 and at 6:47 we got our first bite on the tip rod. Doug set up in the harness and after a 15 minute battle a fat 58" sword came in the boat! 1/1!!! Just as the last picture was being taken I picked my head up to notice a little more pressure than normal on one of the 3 lines we were able to keep out while we fought that first fish. I cranked on it and we were tight on a decent fish that started ripping drag. Stew settled in and started working the fish with a good bit of drag. After 20 minutes we got a glimpse of a nice fat swordy! another 20 minutes later the fish was boatside and Doug planted the poon and I secured the gaff and we hoisted a nice 78" fish in the boat! My watch read 8:00 PM and as we heard the wind starting to pick up Stew and Doug decided tht we should head in and prep the fish for their trips home!

Length and girth put the fish at around 230lbs.

Bio: Capt. Justin Nighan started fishing earlier than most. Aboard his parents 40' Sportfisherman, Justin started sailing to the Canyons off the New Jersey coast when he was just a few months old. Fishing was his parent's passion for most of his childhood and they took him on every trip. By the age of 16 Justin has already logged almost 500 trips to the NE Canyons and started running his father's boat, the "Sunny Skies". At 18 years old Justin packed up and headed south to attend the U of Miami during which he took part time jobs as a mate/captain and learned what South Florida sportfishing is all about. After receiving his B.S. in Biology (2002) he had a tough decision to make, either to pursuer his true passion, fishing, or to enter the 9-5 world. His choice was easily made and he promptly joined the Canyon Runner Charter fishing crew as a full time mate. Throughout the next 3+ years he fished the NE canyons during the summer, producing over 1000 tuna each season, and fishing South Florida in the winter.
