Since my last fishing report the fishing has definitely cooled off a bit. My last few fishing trips have all produced very similar results. Most catches are consisting of a steady mix of kingfish and bonito with an occasional bottom fish thrown into the mix. Dolphin fishing remains slow and most folks are opting to fish over the reefs.
Let's begin with the kingfish action which has been occurring in unusually deep water. It seems that the kings have been moving deeper and deeper as the summer has progressed. Over the past weekend while fishing a local tournament we caught a king in over two hundred and fifty feet of water while soaking bait intended for a hefty grouper or snapper.
Some of the deeper wrecks have been holding good amounts of amberjack and almaco jacks that always manage provide good action. More and more anglers are having a blast when they target these fish using the very popular butterfly jig systems that are now on the market. Catching these powerful fish on light tackle provides a great challenge to all anglers. The best part of this fishing is that most fish are released to fight another day.
Soon we will start seeing large amounts of baitfish moving into our area and other predatory fish will be on the prowl. The abundance of bait coupled with cooler temperatures should add a spark to the fishing. Once the first cold fronts start pushing through we will start to see solid catches of spanish mackeral that will also provide a ton of fun.
