Orlando Muniz

First of all, I would like to wish everyone a great New Year. So far the new year has brought some pretty sporadic fishing. Many days have turned out to be a wash due to really strong winds. On days when I we have been able to fish catches have consisted of mostly sailfish, dolphin (mahi mahi), kingfish, and some mackerel. The biggest surprise is the low numbers of sailfish that have been released. Fishing should improve once another strong cold front pushes through our area.

One species that has made a pretty good showing this winter is dolphin or mahi. Even though most of the fish are not huge, they are a lot of fun to catch and tasty on the dinner table. It is not uncommon to boat several fish when a school swims by the boat.

Kingfish have also kept things interesting while waiting for the sailfish bite. Most days on the reef seem to include some kingfish action. Just like the dolphin, the kings haven't been giants but we should start to see some bigger ones showing up soon.

People often ask me "How's the fishing?" and I tell them. I also tell them that everyday is different and you're never really sure when the fish are going to fire up. The one thing that I am certain of is that they don't bite well in the living room. The next few months should contain some of the best fishing of the year. If you're ready to give them a shot, contact me so that we can put a trip together.

Till Next Time,

Capt. Orlando Muniz
