SABINE AND CALCASIEU RIVERS

The Calcasieu and Sabine Rivers are both giving up some fish but local fisherman are having to work a little harder. Recent rains have put a small rise in the rivers but they should be slowly dropping with no additional heavy rains, according to river angler, Travis Merritt. Merritt suggest anglers back off the banks a little using deep diving crankbaits to cover water and locate fish. Look for clearer water on both the Calcasieu and Sabine with the west fork of the Calcasieu and the Louisiana side of the Sabine recommended starting areas.

Soft plastics are good follow-up baits to the crankbait once anglers have caught a few in one area. The next river tournament is scheduled for February 9 on the Calcasieu River at Ward 8 Park. Tournament organizer, Travis Merritt, says anglers may pre-register at Lake Charles Tackle or Gulf Coast Tackle. For more info contact Merritt at travis@merrittcompanies.com.
