Fishing continues to be good to excellent along the Southeast coast. April and May are probably two of the best months of the year to target large fish such smoker kingfish and slammer dolphin a.k.a. mahi-mahi. Most trips are still producing at least a shot or two at Sailfish and the Mutton spawn is right around the corner. Now let us talk about recent trips.
Last weekend I fished with Tonya an Rick from PA and they had a great time hauling in some real nice kings up to about 25#. It seemed like there was a rod doubled over every few minutes. Unfortunately on this day the fish won most of the battles. Both anglers had a great time and told me that they could not wait to do it again. Aside from the king action they also had a shot at a nice sail before it went ballistic and threw the hook.
On another trip I fish with an avid reader of cyberangler that called me to book a last minute trip. The weather on this trip was a little rough but we still managed to catch some dolphin and kings. Somehow the sails managed to elude us on this day. Our biggest highlight was when one of our baits intended for kingfish or wahoo was engulfed by a large predator. Afer about a half hour tug o war I told him that this fish was either going to be a tuna or shark. Another half hour passed and we finally had color. Our mystery fish turned out to be a 200# plus lemon shark. NOT BAD AT ALL FOR 20# SPINNING TACKLE. Obviously after eight hours of fishing and an hour long battle this angler was ready to head back in.
Hopefully the fishing will continue to remain hot as we approach the next full moon. I still have a couple of days open this month and several in May. Give me a call if you are interested in getting in on the action.
