Friday I had a half day charter with Nur from Canada. Although we had clear skies and good strong tides for bonefishing, we decided the goal would be to ensure we kept the rods bent while trying our best to avoid the teeth of the 20MPH winds. With a livewell full of pilchards the afternoon smelled of promise. We arrived at our first and only spot of the day and the first three hours went by without notice. A bent rod and a screaming drag were a constant occurrence with only minutes of rest between releasing fish and baiting and replacing hooks . The mackerel fishing was hot and heavy with the occasional mutton and large mangrove being mixed in. After the third hour Nur took a seat, put the rod down and told me he was tired of catching fish. After a few quick pics we were off to the ramp having enjoyed the bounties of Biscayne Bay once again.
As a fishing guide, sometimes you experience a range of emotions throughout the day and the experience of having your client tell you he is tired of catching fish is certainly one that never gets old. I love that feeling!
The bait has been very thick and the snooks, tarpons, mackerels and muttons have been taking full advantage. Make the most of the strong tides this week and high winds since these are good conditions for great bonefishing, but only for the initiated. If you're not used to fishing for bones in high winds wait until the winds drops some, you don't want to make a hard game all the harder.
