Here's a quick run down on what's been happening this week aboard Knot Nancy.
Shorty Francios, Richard Lavalliere, and Polius "George" Salnave combined to catch 4 kingfish, 3 bonito, 1 mutton snapper, and 1 remora on a half day trip. The fish were caught in the Anchorage Area in the 105 - 115 foot range using live pilchards and herring.
Harold Masel, his son, John, and John's son Ethan combined to catch 5 kingfish and 1 out of 3 amberjack (40#'s). Once again the kingfish were caught in the Anchorage Area in 105 - 120 feet. All the kings except for 1 were caught slow trolling flatline pilchards and herring. The AJ was caught over a wreck in 230 feet.
Bob King, Steve Block, and Gus Miret wanted some dolphin for a fish fry. We found a heavy weed lines and large weed patches 18 miles out from Haulover. There were lots of dolphin with many of the throw back variety. They had loads of fun catching and releasing the dolphin and there were a good number of keeper size (24) fish mixed in. The weedlines and patches also held lots of very large (3 - 5 pound) bluerunners. The plans were for a big fish fry the follow evening and they had plenty of fish for everyone.
Brad Coren, his dad, Stu, and sister-in-law Danielle Bialilew combined to catch 18 dolphin and 6 bluerunners. The first school we found was 10 miles out under a frigate bird. The second group of fish were 51 miles out on a large piece of bamboo. The large fish was 12 pounds caught by Brad until his Dad found the big one. Stu's fish tipped the scales at 30 pounds back at TNT Marine Center. All the other fish were in the 5 - 8 pound range. When we started back in at the end of the half day trip, there were still numerous fish swimming around the boat. Mixed in once again with the dolphin were large bluerunners that were great fun to catch.
For the past several days the blue edge has been about 6 - 7 miles out and there has been little to no current on the reef. The kingfish action has slowed down, however, 2 to 3 fish are being found by most boats. When we get the wind back from the east, the blue edge should push back in and the kingfish action should pick right back up.
