HOT!! Spring Time Fishing by
Dave Kostyo
(4/16/2007)
It is definitely springtime!! If you have ever wanted to catch a large dolphin (mahi-mahi) now is the time you should be fishing or booking a trip. To say that we have been catching large dolphin would be an understatement. The large ones are here and they are hungry.

The best way I can describe the fishing off South Florida right now is "magical". We are being blessed with great weather and real good fishing. Spring brings us many diverse angling opportunities.

Whether you choose to fish inshore or offshore, there is plenty of action to be had for a variety of species. On some days, you'll have to do more searching than on others. That just depends on the conditions that exist on the day you go fishing.

Fishing has been good for those who manage to get out. Strong winds have made it difficult for most boats to head offshore.

What a great two weeks of fishing. We are getting into spring and in my opinion springtime offers the best fishing of the year.

We have had a lot of sailfish, some dolphin and kings. Bottom fishing has been a bit tough with an occasional mutton or grouper. We had one trip with a bunch of almaco jacks and then none the next trip.

It's amazing how different 2 days can be. One is a struggle and the other has fish jumping in the boat. Well, not quite!

The tarpon are mean, nasty, and stubborn. We've turned the calendar page from January to February. With that turn, tarpon inshore and sailfish offshore are your best bet. That's a hard combination to beat. With that being said, lets get to the individual day reports.

2/4 on swords, the full moon produces once again! Wow, leaving the dock was kinda questionable yesterday but putting faith into the weather maps i was studying all day payed off and it turned out to be a beautiful night on the water! Last night myself and Capt. Jason Naedel had the Mike Driscol charter out from New Jersey with flat calm seas.

So far this year has not been a disappointment as there are plenty of fish to catch. Sailfish are the species we are primarily catching and the fishing has been good.
