Offshore North Key largo Fishing Was Tough! by
Jim Barlett
(2/02/2007)
Had to work extremely hard for the fish last weekend. Saturday, Devon (mate) and I met Frank, David and James for 2 days of fishing. Saturday started off with North winds blowing 20 knots and we were greeted with seas at 3-5'. The bait was incredibly easy that day and the guys were very efficient at catching them so most of our bait were "primo" hookers and I only threw the net one time to top off the other livewell.

The last two cold fronts have finally gotten the shrimp running. This has finally turned the tarpon fishing on to what it should be this time of year.

Cold weather in place should improve Sailfish bite. Fishing on the edge has been slow. We are still catching the occassional dolphin. Sailfish bite has been on one day off the next. Some of us believe the bite has been slow due to the lack of cool weather this year.

The Tarpon bite has been very hot or very cold. The tarpon bite has been either very hot or very cold. We would either catch several large fish on one night or struggle to get one bite the whole night.

Wow, what a beautiful night on the water. Last night I had the Morrie Rubin charter out on the water. After a slightly late start due to the afternoon rush hour here in Miami we had a beautiful ride out. No sooner did I finish putting the 5th rod out when the close baloon set at 150 gets slammed rips off 50yds and pulls the hook, strike 1!

Windy Weather In Miami by
Dave Kostyo
(1/12/2007)
Windy weather seems to be the norm. Most everyday it is blowing 20 knots and better with just a few exceptions. Tarpon fishing has been hit or miss depending on the evening that you fish. There have been plenty of seatrout in the Bay for those who want calmer water and still want to get out despite the windy conditions.

Holidays in Miami by
Jim Barlett

Offshore fishing in Miami/upper Key Largo. Target species was the Sailfish. The month of December was a tough one. El Nino winds from California and the S. Pacific area have been blowing across the Gulf, keeping the cold fronts to the north of us. This has 2 effects on us. It gives us strong winds/seas and mild temperatures with cold fronts stalling out before reaching us.

Say "Good bye 06" December of 2006 sure was a month to remember. We had a 3 day charter with the Damasceno boys starting on the 21st. The first day was too rough to leave the dock. The second was too rough to fish, but the 3rd day was great.

I've been asked how the tarpon fishing is at Haulover. Are they there yet? I've heard good reports, however, every time I've tried to get out there and find out for myself, the wind has been blowing from an easterly direction at 25 knots or better.

We fished with Don and Sandy Blake in the afternoon of December 6th. We were trying to catch a sailfish for Don on trolled flatline 8 pound line for his fishing club. We raised 4 sailfish while trolling. 2 of those were so hot on the strip teaser that we had trouble getting them to look at the baits.

Tuesday (12/12) was the first day of two with Marty Hammon, his daughter, Becky Hammon, and Ruth Riley. Both women are professional basketball players who play in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). This was Ruth's first time fishing. She and Becky took to catching bait like they'd been doing it for a long time. Today we had both herring and pilchards.

Strong Northeast Winds Means Strong Sailfish Bite Off Miami by
Joe McGivern
(12/07/2006)
With the strong winds, and blue water Sailfish, dolphin, and kingfish have been biteing well! The sailfish are finally here. With the strong NE winds we are having right now, the blue water has moved over the reef and the sailfishing has picked up. Last week was dolphin heaven. On 2 different trips last week we caught multipul dolphin, sharks, and kings. We only caught one sailfish all of last week, but that has changed this week!

Miami Beach Offshore Sport Fishing by

Green water and no current, blue green water out deep with current, and a sharp blue/green edge with a roaring north current in 110 feet along with winds as light as 6 knots and as heavy as 17 knots have made for some decent fishing off Key Biscayne and Miami Beach. There have been sailfish, kingfish, and dolphin coming through as well as some pesky small brown sharks. The nice surprise we had on our last trip was small cobia.
